My love for visual communication began as soon as I picked up a writing instrument and realized that it could be used for much more than words. While teaching myself to draw, I started to incorporate text as an element in my art. It’s rare that a graphic designer can actually draw, but I am one of the few in the industry that can put together a killer masterpiece with only pencil and paper. Because my imagination is so well-rounded, I am the master of applying organic beauty to a structured and functional format. I’ve studied graphic design at the Art Institute of San Diego, California under the instruction of legendary teachers such as Robert Hanon (a cartoonist for the local newspaper) and Richard Ybarra (a typography tyrant for the past two decades). When I came to this institution, all I had were my sketches, and a desperation for a career in which my visual communication skills would be appreciated. Here, I acquired experience tutoring peers in Photoshop, Illustrator, and technical drawing. After my first year of studying commercial art, I realized that working for a big corporation wasn’t for me. I couldn’t imagine myself being stifled into a cubicle, creating pharmaceutical ads, or something else that doesn’t align with my morals. Since I have a legion of talented individuals within my circle of friends, I’ve decided that I will become an essential ally for small businesses with my freelance work.
